Urban Forest Management Plan
The HRM's Urban Forest Management Plan Update
The Halifax Regional Municipality is in the process of updating its 2013 Urban Forest Master Plan. The new Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) will guide the management of the HRM's urban forest over the next 25 years, through a period of rapid community growth and changing climate. The updated UFMP will include:
- baseline information on the current state and composition of Halifax’s urban forest,
- an updated long-term vision for the city’s urban forest,
- summaries of community feedback and engagement initiatives,
- new program goals, strategies, actions, indicators, and targets, and
- operational guidance to support the plan’s implementation.
Two phases of public engagement have helped shape the development of the UFMP. The first phase of engagement took place in February 2024 to inform the plan’s vision and goals, and the second phase over the summer of 2024 to collect community feedback and perspectives on the draft.
The plan is now undergoing a final round of revisions, in consideration of the feedback received on the draft over the second phase of engagement. The project team intends to bring the plan to Council for adoption in early 2025.
