PROJECT OVERVIEW

Transom Drive is a two-hectare park located at 195 Transom Drive, Bedford. It was obtained by the municipality in 2007 as part of the surrounding subdivision development. The park has a playground and a large double tennis court, but most of it is in an unfinished state. It could be improved with changes, including additional amenities and landscaping.

The municipality is seeking public input for the development of a park plan that would guide future enhancements. An initial concept plan that identifies possible progressive improvements has been prepared. It is the subject of a series of survey questions.

The plan has been developed based on several factors, including:

  • although the park is relatively large, based on the characteristics of its surroundings and the limited capabilities for on-street and onsite parking, it should be viewed as a local park with amenities for the surrounding area
  • there are access points to the park that would benefit from being connected with a developed pathway
  • although a section of the park is steeply sloped, there is a relatively central area that could be improved
  • it would be beneficial for the court to be able to be used for a variety of activities, rather than only a specialized activity, such as tennis
  • based on the proximity of surrounding houses and the park’s local character, amenities that typically have high levels of noise irritants, including off-leash areas and pickleball, are not considered to be suitable

Information gathered from site visits, analysis and past community submissions about the park have been used to develop the initial concept plan. Feedback gathered from the survey will be used to refine the plan, which will be posted on the Shape Your City website for review by the community. After comments have been received, a final park plan will be presented to Regional Council. Once adopted, the proposed improvements will be included within forthcoming budget cycles.
