  • Future Service Communities

    The need for additional serviced lands to provide housing and services to accommodate population growth has been identified through the ongoing Regional Plan Review. In order to support the region’s current and expected population growth, the Province has invested $2.3 million to enable the municipality to conduct a series of critical technical studies to inform the possibility of supporting fully serviced development in four study areas.

    WM Fares Architects applied on behalf of Rank Inc. to begin a comprehensive planning process to allow the development of the Mic Mac Mall lands bound by Micmac Boulevard, Horizon Court, and Highway 111 identified on the map below. The proposal includes approximately 2,300 new residential units, including 400 units for a retirement facility built around the existing mall, and additional commercial office and retail space.

    ZZap Consulting Inc., on behalf of North American Developments Limited (NADL), applied to enable a mixed-use, transit-oriented community with approximately 4,000 residential units. Their current proposal shows a mix of housing types, retail and hotel commercial use, a new public street connection from Eileen Stubbs Avenue to Commodore Drive, a neighbourhood park at the southwest corner of Finlay Drive and Wright Avenue, and active transportation connections including a trail along Frenchman Lake.

    Halifax Regional Council is proposing to adopt amendments to the Municipal Planning Strategy and Land Use By-law for Beaver Bank, Hammonds Plains, and Upper Sackville to make changes to the land use policies and regulations for the Upper Hammonds Plains Land Use Designation and GU -1 (General Use) Zone.

    A comprehensive master planning process was initiated by Regional Council for the Middle Sackville Urban Local Growth Centre on lands surrounding the Highway 101 – Margeson Drive interchange in Middle Sackville.
